Day 18 Family Visit
Today we rode back to Kathmandu from Pokhara. On the way we visited Pramod's (our guide) family. They were displaced from their home village by the earthquake last year and have not been able to rebuild yet. Pramod showed us where he sleeps, in a U-shaped aluminum structure with a bed for him and another for his brother. The rest of the family live and sleep in a small, partially damaged adobe home. The upstairs is unsafe and unlivable from the quake.
It was a joy to meet his family. They radiated warmth and kindness and offered both Sylvia and me a Tibetan cloth, a symbol of good fortune and other blessings. Pramod showed us the family cow in a shelter beside the house and offered us tea with fresh milk. The parents are farmers and the kids help. They have some land beside their home and still work their land at their destroyed village which is about a 2 hour walk up the hillside. What a great punctuation mark to end our trip!
